The PROB-PROM clinical study: determine the winning conditions for improving the health of newborns after preterm water breaking.
This study is conducted by the CHUM research centre.
Eight hospitals in Quebec and Ontario are also participating in the study.
Why this study is important?
Preterm water breaking accounts for approximately 30% of premature births. Currently, antibiotics are used to prevent these infections, but they also disrupt the natural balance of microorganisms in the vagina (vaginal flora).
What we want to find out
Our team is the first in Canada to investigate the use of vaginal probiotics as an adjunct therapy in the context of preterm water breaking in mid- pregnancy.
More precisely, the purpose of this study is to determine whether taking vaginal probiotics can help to restore the balance of microorganisms in the vagina (study of the microbiota) to better protect the mother and the baby.
Because nothing is more important than the health of our children
For this study, women who have had water breaking will be recruited at the hospital.

Participating hospital
Eight hospital centres in Quebec and Ontario, along with a team of researchers, are working together to carry out this study. It is led by Dr. Jean-Charles Pasquier, an obstetrician-gynecologist at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM).
